Hello,

I’m a scholar of religion. I focus on the intersections of capitalism, religion, and health in modern America.

My research is guided by an interest in the social formation and arbitration of religion. As an ethnographer, I track how the experience of religion is produced outside the sphere of traditional religion through material culture, social innovation, affect, and capitalist logic, with special attention to North America.

I am currently working on a project entitled Spiritual Exercises: Fitness and Religion in Modern America where I follow exercisers and fitness entrepreneurs online and into the studio as they form community and seek fulfillment in mind, body, and spirit. Using the popular fitness brands CrossFit and SoulCycle as case studies, I observe how the structuring logics of American Christianity operate in the consumerist landscape of health, wellness, and fitness to understand how religion is enlisted in the politicized work of reforming the body.
